Pain is one of the most prevalent and primitive clinical feature encountered to the physician. It has been described in all the traditional systems of medicine including Unani Medicine. It may be defined as unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with tissue damage. This tissue damage may be actual or potential and may be caused by different causes. According to Unani Medicine the main cause of the pain is Dystemperment that is caused by the accumulation of morbid matter at the particular part of the body and the nature of pain may vary according the quality and quantity of the morbid matter and site of their accumulation. The important feature of morbid matter that determines the method of pain management is the tissue at which the morbid matter is accumulated in the body part and their quality and quantity. Unani system of medicine provides different treatment method for the pain depending upon the nature and type of morbid matter and how it may be removed from the particular body part or system. In this paper I will discuss about different methods of pain management in Unani Medicine and the different determining factors in choosing a particular method.
Mohammad Saad Ahmad Khan is working as Assistant Professor, Department of Ilaj-Bit-Tadbeer, Faculty of Unani Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India, since 2011. He completed his MD Moalejat in 2006. Before joining Department of Ilaj-Bit-Tadbeer, Faculty of Unani Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University as Assistant Professor in 2011, He served as Senior Research Fellow (SRF) in the department of TB & Respiratory Diseases JN Medical College AMU, Aligarh. He also worked as a Lecturer in different colleges after completion of his MD. His area of interest is intervention of different Unani Regimenal Procedures in the management of different Respiratory & Lifestyle Diseases and pain management. He is very keenly interested in the validation of different basic Unani concepts in the light of recent advancement of Medical and basic sciences.
