Abstract

Homoeopathy and its applicability in epidemics

Homoeopathy is based on the principle of “Similia Similibus Curantur” which is translated to “Like Cure Likes” the principle was discovered by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in late 18th century. Since the discovery the pathy has encountered many challenges and obstacles. Presently, it is the second largest system of medicine practiced around the globe. Since the discovery homoeopathy has proved its worth in many epidemics which the people faced during different times and in different places. There are several examples of that in the homoeopathic literatures by Dr. Hahnemann like Organon, the theory of chronic disease and materia medica pura etc. There have been several examples of the efficacy of the homoeopathy in epidemics from different homoeopaths and institutions too. During the pandemic of Spanish flu in 1918 homoeopathy showed promising results in statistics. Dr. Hahnemann in his Organon of medicine has talked about the “genus epidemicus” which simply means the common preventive and curative medicine for a particular epidemic at a particular time. He also have talked about the ways in which a homoeopath can find and prescribe the “genus epidemicus” Even during this Covid 19 pandemic there had been a debate for the use homoeopathy to treat it. One of the research which was done in Italy showed positive results too where 50 patient who took homoeopathic treatment didn’t require to be hospitalized though the small sample size is what causes a concern among the fellow homoeopaths. My experience of using homoeopathy during the covid19 situation in India have been positive till now and I hope a more comprehensive study by the AYUSH department of Indian Govt. will be completed in near future and hopefully will show the positive outcome for the same.
